The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi is to set up an Intensive Care Foundation to solicit donations from individuals and corporate bodies.

The purpose is to generate the requisite financial resources to properly cater for all critically ill or injured patients who need Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services.

Professor Ohene Adjei, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital announced this to close the 10th Annual National Update Course in Anesthesia organized by the Directorate of Anesthesia and Intensive Care of the hospital in collaboration with the University of Utah of the United States of America. The Ghana program through the University of Utah Global Health Alliance has become the flagship of global health efforts on campus and a model that is spreading to other parts of the globe through the Global Health Initiative.

“The students want to help somebody,” said Dr. DeVon Hale, and this altruistic approach sprouted the global health endeavors of the U School of Medicine in the early ‘90s. Dr. Hale and his colleagues at the School of Medicine obliged these students and arranged for them to travel across the globe to help those in need of medical attention.

Unfortunately some of these students found themselves in situations that required skills beyond their training, Dr Hale said. They were expected to perform medical procedures they were not qualified to do and often

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Global Health Alliance - student association will be hosting the 1st Annual University of Utah Global Health Conference “Utah connecting with the world” on Friday, May 7, 2010.

The conference, to be held at the U’s Eccles Health Sciences Education Building, 26 South 2000 East, will begin at 8:00 AM and run through 3:00 PM. The event will include a morning plenary session featuring two renowned experts in Ghanaian reproductive health, Dr. Daniel Ansong and Dr. Easmon Otupiri, social entrepreneur, Dr. Warner Woodsworth, who will be speaking on microfinance, and Dr. Ray Price, a surgeon who has developed techniques for laparoscopic surgery in the developing world.
