GHI Three-Year Plan: 2010-2013

Establish a Global Health Institute at the University of Utah

  • Transfer community health success to other international sites.
  • Increase the US resources by partnering with other US medical schools.
  • Integrate additional partners such as Water for People.
  • Expand collaborative, community-based interventions to address health, economics, education and infrastructure with the accompanying scholarship to facilitate worldwide adoption of this approach.
  • Develop sustainable village academy.
  • Support global conference on sustainable programs and models.
  • Expand the health professional exchange programs in China and India.
  • Identify a medical school exchange site in Latin America.

Education

  • In and around Kumasi, Ghana: create middle and high school facilities readily accessible to village children (which will dramatically increase the attendance of girls beyond 6th grade); facilitate a teacher education program to create certified teachers (the majority of teachers currently do not possess teaching certification) and expand village public initiatives to elevate the importance of education and status of teachers and educators. Update the existing socio-economic survey to track the impact of the Utah Model on the local population.
  • Children from a village near Vadodara, IndiaNear Vadodara, India and Hainan, China: expand partnerships with local Hospital, University and Communities, introduce teaching and research projects focused on local needs such as tropical disease treatment and prevention, triage skills, disease tracking and census, child and maternal care, as well as agricultural expertise. Provide basic educational supplies and support for teachers and teacher training.  Perform "baseline" surveys to document and track the impact of the Utah activities on the local population.
  • In all areas: identify and place scholarly articles to share the insights gained through the implementation of the Utah Model.

Health

  • Roll out the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) model to villages; training for Emergency Medical Treatment; developing training programs for specific medical disciplines, such as neurologists, anesthesiologists, ophthalmologists, family medicine, etc.
  • Support the planning and construction of Community Health Facility in Ghana and add maternity wing.
  • Train lay midwives.
  • Expand community-based intervention programs addressing issues of spaced births, delaying age of first pregnancies, stigmas associated with infertility, and other issues contributing to high birth rates and high infant mortality.

Economics

  • Expand current community cooperative, incorporating teaching and mentoring to help in local micro and mid level finance efforts as well as developing business plans.
  • Support transition from cooperatives to increased entrepreneurial-based economic development.
