Community Engagement

The University of Utah, with their partners, launched the Bassi Pathana Community Collaborative Development Project (BP-CCDP) in the fall of 2010. A community-based participatory approach has resulted in active community planning and tackling community-prioritized needs, such as water sanitation and hygiene projects.


Education - 2011

Community Meeting for the Bassi Pathana Community Collaborative Development ProjectThe India Study Abroad trip included 14 Utah students with faculty direction by Dr. Jim VanDerslice. Students played an integral role in conducting a community health needs assessment in nine villages, including examining the health system, environmental conditions, social context in the villages, and health needs. Other activities included cultural excursions and seminars.

The University of Utah is collaborating with the PGI School of Public Health to develop joint research, academic exchanges, and global health curricula. PGI-SPH hosted an interaction with Indian and Utah faculty and staff during the 2011 Global Health Study Abroad trip and two of their students participated with the needs assessment alongside Utah students.

Research and Projects

2011 field work focused on gathering baseline data for a community health needs assessment in nine rural villages, which sets the stage for future research and community development activities. 2012 research and projects include:

Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH)

  • Village mapping, sanitary survey, and water quality testing (2011)
  • Training of Village WaSH Promoters (2012)
  • Village Water Quality and Hygiene Study (2012)

Gender Equity:

  • Study of Gender Disparities in Secondary Education in Rural Punjab, India

Child Nutrition and Pre-school Services:

  • A Study of Village-level Nutritional Services in Rural Punjab, India
  • Secondary Analysis of Pediatric Anthropometric Data from Punjab, India

Other High Priority Issues include:

  • Adult Health literacy/ Awareness of Chronic Diseases
  • Health Systems Improvement / Access to health care
