Thailand Global Health Study Abroad
Overview
The Thailand International Elective (TIE) is a four week study abroad didactic overview of global health. The program provides a working knowledge of global health and the cultural, social, political, and health issues currently facing developing countries such as Thailand. TIE is a comprehensive approach for introducing individuals to international work. TIE participants study tropical medicine, public health methodologies for the developing world, traditional medicine, and finally participate in field practical (clinical) work.
TIE Global Objectives / The Experience
Help participants attain a clear view of global health based on introduction to a broad range of topics.- Increase knowledge, skills, motivation and advocacy for change in a global health setting; opportunities provided for in-depth exchange of cross-cultural experiences with clinicians and health professionals in Thailand.
- Increase awareness of the need for cooperation between the health and other professions globally, so that partnerships can be built. These partnerships should be based on equity, transparency and accountability.
- Learn methods to improve communication and networking among various individuals, cross cultural groups, NGO organizations and government institutions in global setting.
- Increase awareness of the importance of initiatives on behalf of unheard peoples to improve health and promote sustainable community development, including traditional and indigenous approaches.
Content includes:
- Social and Environmental Health Care in the Tropics
- Traditional and Alternative Medicine
- Border Health and Care of Displaced Persons
- Managing Complex Emergencies in Asia
- Clinical Diseases of the Tropics, such as tuberculosis, avian flu, and HIV/AIDS
- Clinical experience includes infectious disease, refugee health, internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and emergency medicine.
